Over 500 Mayors Give Gratitude to Extra Mile Heroes on November 1
Extra Mile Day Celebrates Volunteer Spirit Across America

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – October 28, 2021 – Mayors from 520 U.S. cities will declare November 1 as Extra Mile Day – a day to acknowledge the individuals and organizations that are dedicated to “going the extra mile” in volunteerism in order to support local community events and services.

In connection with Extra Mile America, mayors in all 50 states have embraced the “Extra Mile Day” movement. At a time when requests for local services exceed budgets, Extra Mile Day celebrates the people stepping forward and unselfishly serving. The vision of motivational author Shawn Anderson, “Extra Mile Day” was created in 2009 with 23 inaugural cities; its outreach continues to grow.

From donating food to the needy to raising money for local libraries, thousands of Americans are contributing and volunteering in significant ways across the United States. Extra Mile Day provides Mayors with a chance to say “thank you.”

Mayor Nancy Bauder has made the declaration in Leavenworth, Kansas. “To me, going the extra mile means exceeding expectations, not just meeting them. This past year, Leavenworth City staff, businesses, our military residents and services, and our community non-profits exceeded expectations in providing safety and health to our community. I’m proud of how our City pulled together during this time.”

“I believe life’s real heroes are the ones who unselfishly give of themselves to purposes that make life better for others,” shares Anderson, the Founder of Extra Mile Day. “It’s the teacher spending time after school to tutor struggling students; it’s the volunteers signing up every week at the animal shelter or walking the streets to make sure the homeless have food and care. It’s the person who goes the extra mile mowing their busy neighbor’s lawn. ‘Going the extra mile’ is about making the world better by spreading positive goodwill.”

Anderson continues, “When we wait for a government program or an employer to make our lives better, that’s the wrong strategy. It’s up to us. It’s you and me looking in the mirror and saying ‘It’s my time to make a difference.’ Extra Mile Day is a reminder of the power we each have to make positive change happen when we choose to do more, give more, and ‘go the extra mile.’”
