Volcanic Adventures in Tonga: Species Conservation on Tin Can Island is about Ann Göth’s experience of Tongan culture and her contributions to saving the volcano birds from extinction. Ann found a chance to broaden her view of the world when she got a call from her boyfriend and decided to join him on a mission to save an endangered bird species known as Malau from extinction on a remote island in Tonga. The book follows Ann and her boyfriend’s encounter with the Malau birds and the contributions of the locals on the volcanic island of Niuafo’ou to finding and learning about the birds. Additionally, Ann narrates the troubles she had while trying to adjust to a different culture and limited amenities. Like any remarkable travel story, her book is an intriguing mix of difficulties and delights.
As someone who fantasizes about exploring remote civilizations, this book was an exciting opportunity for me to learn about the Tongan people. It includes Ann’s vivid account of various things that are common to many tribal societies, such as matriarchy and having few material possessions. The reader gets to experience the rich culture of the Tongan people and the beauty of the natural world on the remote island as if in person. I loved that it reveals a Westerner’s view of a different culture and the author’s honest opinion of the things she found challenging, including language differences and being told that she is not “big fat” enough. Volcanic Adventures in Tonga offers a fun adventure and a profound, memorable travel experience. It’s also a timely reminder to preserve endangered species and be conscious of climate change. Every travel enthusiast and conservationist would love this book. I didn’t want to miss a thing!”
