As Metaverse and Artificial Intelligence Industries Gather Steam, A Chinese Lab Makes Interesting Attempts Using Digital Technology
In July 2023, the Hurun Research Institute released the “Hurun China Metaverse Companies with the Greatest Potential 2023”, listing the top 200 Chinese enterprises with the greatest development potential in the Metaverse field. Among them, a total of 50 companies from the Greater Bay Area (GBA) accounted for a quarter in the list. The three major cities in the GBA – Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong – all secured positions in the national top 10 cities.
Over the past two years, the GBA in China has been actively making efforts in the fields of technology, application scenarios, and Web 3.0. Cities such as Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong are collectively leading breakthroughs in the development of the Metaverse and artificial intelligence industries. China is catching up with and surpass global progress, and all countries are competing in the era of Web 3.0. Many technology-based organizations and enterprises that integrate new-generation digital technologies are attracting global attention. For example, the Greater Bay Area Metaverse International Communication Lab situated in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is continuously launching innovative activities by combining Metaverse and artificial intelligence technologies.
According to public reports, the GBA MIC Lab has set up the “What’s New in Guangdong CHANNEL” on the well-known virtual reality (VR) cinema software Bigscreen, where global netizens can gain an unique access to premium video content and exchange views through virtual reality technology
The lab has also produced several 4K VR 360° films, such as the panoramic city exploring Vlog VR×GBA | Panoramic Viewscape in South China’s Nansha with American Vlogger. Using virtual human IP, they made a digital music MV titled “Us” and hosted the “Beautiful Guangdong” Metaverse international exhibition on popular VR platforms like VRChat and Spatial. These innovative Web 3.0 activities, created through VR, AR, AI and other technologies, provide new perspectives and fantasies for content creators from different countries worldwide.
During the traditional Mid-Autumn Festival in China this year, GBA MIC Lab created a three-dimensional space with the characteristics of Guangdong folk culture in the virtual world, and allowed users to interact in various ways in a VR art exhibitions. The lab invited Hong Kong singer Edmond Leung to perform songs in virtual human forms in the Metaverse by means of motion capture devices. In the future, more forms of performance may be seen on the virtual stage.

On December 6, 2023, the 1st Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Metaverse International Communication Forum, hosted by GBA MIC Lab in Guangzhou, China, will focus on how digital technology empowers content production and international communication. Top experts, scholars, and enterprise representatives from the Metaverse-related fields will gather together to explore the future development of the Metaverse and artificial intelligence.
The person in charge of GBA MIC Lab told us that the lab will continue to organize workshops and other forms of activities to enhance communication and collaboration among Chinese technology companies, institutions, and the international tech community.
