The fashion community gathered on Monday, February 12, to launch The Encyclopedia of New York Fashion during New York Fashion Week. The event was held at FashionPhile’s Flagship store in the Starrett-Lehigh Building with an introduction by FashionPhile founder, Sarah Davis. The much-anticipated release of Jewel Elizabeth’s debut book (Marie Claire, BuzzFeed, The Today Show) celebrates the 365-page book that documents New York’s contribution to the fashion world.

The launch attracted notable figures from various corners of the fashion industry, including Nichole Sesti of The Niche Shop, Tina Vartanian from Issued Magazine, Alana Isbell of My Devil’s Thrift, Molly Masi from Small Girls PR, Karen Armstrong of Chanklas Atelier, stylist Diana Garcia from The Traditionally Modern, and fashion influencers Amy Anderson, Angelica Eranović, and Liv Barnes.

The Starrett-Lehigh Building, a landmark known for its creative tenants, was the chosen venue for NYFW by the CFDA and IMG. FashionPhile’s 60,000 square-foot flagship store offered guests a chance to engage with the book’s content through luxury purse displays and a sneak peek reading by the author. Sarah Davis spoke about the book’s aim to document the diverse elements of New York’s fashion scene, emphasizing the city’s significant role in shaping global fashion trends.

The Encyclopedia of New York Fashion is Jewel Elizabeth’s debut book. After writing for prestigious magazines like Marie Claire, Time and Shop Today, the author was inspired to document 365 people, places and things that make up New York fashion history. The book covers the historical development of fashion in New York City, the ripple effect across the fashion world and the evolution of essential fashion movements. It also highlights the contributions of New York fashion inventions like the safety pin and the ballet flat, profiles of key figures and iconic locations inherent to New York’s fashion story.

The evening also featured discussions on current issues in fashion, such as sustainability and inclusivity, reflecting on how New York can contribute to addressing these challenges. The interactions among guests underscored the community aspect of the city’s fashion industry and its potential for future growth.

FashionPhile is a leading retailer in the luxury resale market, offering an extensive collection of pre-owned designer handbags and accessories. Established to provide sustainable luxury shopping experiences, the company has become a trusted destination for fashion enthusiasts worldwide.

The author, Jewel Elizabeth, exclusively wore NYC designers mentioned in the book: a candy pink Norma Kamali dress, a white Michael Kors blazer, white pumps from Marc Jacobs and a hand-sewn flower pin from M&J Trimming. She expressed hope that the book would serve as a resource for those interested in the fashion industry, offering insights into its complexities and celebrating its achievements. “The book invites readers to explore the diverse and dynamic nature of New York fashion, acknowledging its successes and impact on the world’s fashion capitals,” the author noted.

The Encyclopedia of New York Fashion is now available for pre-order, aiming to be a valuable addition to the libraries of fashion enthusiasts, historians and professionals alike.
