Minsk-based software engineer Yury Pisarchyk has written thousands of lines of codes in his career spanning ten years, but his most significant calling came a month ago when he wrote the most flawless and concise code which got him on top of a leaderboard featuring 0.316 Million or 3.16 Lakh coders worldwide. Overnight, this Belarusian became ‘the top coder of the world’ as he took the champion’s trophy at the world’s largest coding competition – TechGig Code Gladiators 2021.

Code Gladiators – instituted in 2014 – is an annual coding competition organised by TechGig, India’s biggest technology community with 4 Million technologists onboard. Its first edition in 2014 saw 35,000 registered participants. The 2017 edition of Code Gladiators won the Guiness World Record for being the largest programming event globally, beating even China’s Baidu.

The participants’ interest swelled to 802% in eight years as this year Code Gladiators recorded 0.316 Million registrations. Its fifth edition in 2017 was the most significant one as Code Gladiators was recognised as the ‘biggest programming event’ ever with 81,641 unique submissions. The present participation number is over three times this record breaking number.

In all these years, the event focussed on new-age technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, RPA and others – working with companies to help them find out-of-box solutions to their business problems. These technologies are featured in the theme hackathons and often offer hiring opportunities to the top teams.

Talking about the growth of Code Gladiators, Sanjay Goyal, Business Head, TechGig said, “The vision of Code Gladiators coding competition is to democratise tech talent discovery. Any coder, from any part of the world, with any work experience level can participate here and win accolades on the basis of their coding prowess. In all these eight years, we have seen winners range from fresh graduates to professionals with over 20 years of work experience. This year, Belarus’ Yury PIsarchyk toppled 0.316 Million programmers to claim the top title. Also this year the international participation has seen 200% growth. This, and the inclusion of new-age technologies proves that Code Gladiators truly crossed all boundaries – geographical and well as technological.”

The finale day of Code Gladiators 2021 edition saw a beeline of top technology leaders including Infosys founder Mr NR Narayana Murthy and Mr Allen Shaheen, EVP, Global Practice Head Cognizant Enterprise, Engineering addressing the finalists virtually. They were joined by CXOs from technology companies as Great Learning, VMware, UiPath, Globant, Accenture, Nutanix, Publicis Sapient, Zinnov, Zycus, TomTom in a series of talks and panel discussions intended to outline the trends and nuances of coding careers.

This event concluded with a prize distribution ceremony where Yury and 14 other winners were felicitated. Winners took home participation certificates, trophies and the prize money. The total prize pool for Code Gladiators 2021 was INR 5 Million (roughly equal to USD 67,308).

For most prize winners, the glory of winning at the world’s biggest coding competition is still sinking in. Some said that congratulatory messages from peers and friends were pouring in while some had been approached with job offers too. Ask Yury what his most cherished memory is, “I had set the alarm for much earlier than usual, and also borrowed a webcam from my cousin because mine worked badly :)”.
